I read an article in Automotive News this summer talking about how the new Prius kept getting delayed because they were falling short on their performance improvement benchmarks or something. Maybe this is something they decided to do so it didn't look like they were scrambling to get things up to speed.

I was just thinking today how Toyota only knows how to sell boring. Their attempt at interesting, Scion, falls flat for most people. They've been marketing the corolla and Camry as something more than slightly over styled boring cars. They're great cars for what they are. Honestly those two cars are perfect for the majority of the population. I think they're resting on laurels like Honda. The Americans, Koreans, and Mazda are catching up or passing them in almost every category. My Mazda 3 beats the civic and corolla in nearly every objectionable measure. People just buy Hondas and Toyotas as the safe bet or because they can get them cheaper than the competition.

No, I've seen that, it was an engineer that stated that if they can't achieve noticeable improvements over the current one, they might as well build no Prius at all. But it was more about design, than it was about technology or performance.

Ah ok. I read it in the bathroom during my internship last summer, so my memory is a little foggy haha.

Maybe it's like the new Corolla...and the 2015 Tacoma...change the outside and hope nobody trading in their '08 notices there isn't a difference!

Not the case, the Prius will debut a new platform, that will underpin most of Toyota's small cars, and will get new hybrid tech.

IMO, Japan and Germany, aside from Mazda, are starting to enter a very 80's period like the US had that allowed them to over take us. Now our cars are leagues better than what they offer, I feel anyway.

The problem is that they peaked in 2007 and then stopped improving . Literally, the Corolla and Camry are not really any better than a new 2007 Camry. That's 7 years of falling behind, and in terms of safety ratings, MPG, etc. they're starting to hurt because of it.

They know how to build proper enthusiast cars. Honda builds Indycar and F1 engines for crying out loud! The problem is they've entered a comfort zone that they don't want to risk tarnishing for one performance-oriented product.

I'm more poking the toyota bear. I'm underwhelmed by the civic and corolla. I'm impressed by the accord

The 2014 corolla feels cheaper inside than my old 2004 corolla. It's practically the same car.

I agree. Honda has pulled away from a lot of the stuff that made their small cars great. Toyota made the push for boring cars about 10 years ago. I even remember their statement of them pulling out of anything sporty and focusing on fuel economy. When I was shopping for a new car it boiled down to the focus or the 3.

I was surprised by how far the civic and corolla were behind the curve compared to their competition.
